Presents
A night of gospel music and reflection for ALL people
Fifty years ago , black and white Freedom Riders set out on buses for the South to challenge local segregation laws, particularly in bus terminals' restaurants and waiting rooms. Their 1961 journey became a turning point in the civil rights movement when the activists were met with mob violence in Mississippi and Alabama, and images of the bitter attacks were widely aired on TV and in the press.
One of those riders was a 19-year-old white kid from Forest Hills, Queens, named Lew Zuchman. Lew will tell his story and reflect on the civil rights movement as he sees it, fifty years later.

Come to Saint
Brigid's
Sunday, January 15 • 7-9:30pm • Saint Brigid's Church

After bailing out of jail in Jackson, Mississippi, Jean Denton Thompson returned to New Orleans to train Freedom Riders about to go into Jackson. Continued to do sit-ins and picketing for several years. She also did civil rights work elsewhere in the South, including Canton, Mississippi, after Medgar Evers was murdered, and in North Carolina.

David and Winonah Meyers were Freedom Riders before they eventually married. Winonah had the distinction of being incarcerated longer than any of the others. 400 Freedom Riders had been arrested. Many served brief jail sentences and happily got out. Not Winonah, who stubbornly refused bail, refused even to file an appeal. Jailed on June 11, she stayed behind bars until Christmas Day.
Among the gospel choirs celebrating the night with music is the renowned Sister Thea Bowman Diocesan Choir.
