On Sunday, July 1, 2001, Father Ralph greeted the Spanish community in these words:

Hace unos meses cuando averigüé que yo sería el nuevo pastor de Santa Brigida, decidí hacer una visita silenciosa asistiendo a la Misa con ustedes. Algunos de ustedes recordaran que yo estaba de pie calladamente allí cuando nuestro buen amigo Manuel me descubrió y decidió presentarme a la comunidad.
¡Que visita silenciosa! Es más, él me invitó a pararme enfrente de ustedes y decir unas palabras de saludo! ¡Hay caramba! Yo no estaba preparado para decir algo pero cuando busqué palabras para hablar en español, yo les mire y vi sus sonrisas dando me la bienvenida y su estímulo.

Después de todo, ustedes saben lo que es intentar decir sus primeras palabras en inglés. Desde sus primeros días en Long Island, apuesto que ustedes hablan mejor ingles ahora—y, bueno como pueden ver, desde mi primer día en Westbury, yo puedo hablar mejor español. Claro, eso es porque un amigo mío me ayudó a preparar estas palabras. Yo todavía tengo problemas para entender lo qué me dicen y en algunos días yo ni puedo reunir dos palabras juntas en español.
¡Pero como estaremos pasando los próximos años juntos, yo creo que con el tiempo, ustedes me tendrán hablando español como nuestro buen amigo Manuel y yo les ayudaré para que ustedes hablen inglés como el Padre Jim!

Ahora que he explicado mis metas del idioma, yo quiero contarles de mi alegría de ser su nuevo pastor. Y como su pastor yo quiero decirles que ustedes no son los VISITANTES a esta iglesia. Ustedes PERTENECEN a esta iglesia. Ustedes SON esta iglesia. Ustedes son la iglesia tanto como nuestros hermanos y hermanas que nacieron aquí en Long Island y tanto como nuestros hermanos y hermanas que vinieron de Irlanda, Italia, Haití, las Filipinas y muchas otras tierras.
Yo espero celebrar con ustedes las tradiciones que ustedes han traído de sus propios países. Sus tradiciones de fe continúan enriqueciendo nuestra comunidad aquí y ellos me enriquecerán a mí. Al mismo tiempo yo buscaré maneras de compartir con usted las tradiciones que han sido parte de nuestra comunidad de Long Island y espero que todos nosotros— hermanos y hermanas—compartamos nuestras culturas y visiones de fe juntos.

Finalmente, yo quiero decirles un secreto. Yo estoy muy nervioso de empezar como su nuevo pastor. Yo nunca he sido un pastor antes y St. Brigid es muy nueva y muy grande. Pero entonces yo recuerdo este mensaje de Dios, “no Tengas miedo.” Y si St. Brigid es nuevo a ustedes y si ustedes también están nerviosos, yo quiero compartir con ustedes esas mismas palabras, “no Tengan miedo.”

Nosotros juntos podremos crecer como una familia en el amor de Jesucristo. Yo espero ser una familia junta en los días y meses y años venideros.

A few months ago when I found out that I was to be the new pastor of
St. Brigid's, I decided to pay a quiet visit by attending Mass with
you.

Some of you may remember that I was quietly standing over there when
our good friend Manuel (Ramos) spotted me and decided to introduce me to the
community. So much for a quiet visit! What was more, he then invited me to
stand up here and say a few words to greet you! Hay caramba! I was not
prepared to say anything but as I searched for words to say in Spanish I
looked at you and saw your welcoming smiles and your encouragement.
After all, you know what it was like to try to say your first words
in English.

Since your first days on Long Island, I'll bet you speak
better English already -- and as you can see, since my first day in
Westbury, I can speak better Spanish. Of course that is because a
friend of mine helped me to prepare these words. I still have
trouble understanding what people say to me and on some days I cannot put
two words together in Spanish.

But since we will be spending the next few years together, I believe
that over time you will having me speaking Spanish like Manuel and I will help you to
speak English like Father Jim!

Now that I have explained my language goals, I want to tell you of
my joy at being your new pastor. And as your pastor I want to tell you
that you are not VISITORS to this church. You BELONG to this
church. You ARE this church. You are the church as much as our brothers and
sisters who were born here on Long Island and as much as our
brothers and sisters who came from Ireland, Italy, Haiti, the Philipines and
many other lands.

I look forward to celebrating with you the traditions that you have
brought from your own countries. Your traditions of faith continue
to enrich our community here and they will enrich me. At the same time
I will look for ways to share with you the traditions that have been
part of our Long Island community and I hope that all of us -- as
brothers and sisters -- can share our cultures and visions of faith together.

Finally, I want to tell you a secret. I am very nervous as I
start as your new pastor. I have never been a pastor before and St. Brigid's
is very new and very big. But then I remember this message from God,
"Be not afraid." If St. Brigid's is new to some of you and if you are nervous
too, I want to share with you those same words, "Be not afraid."

Together we can grow as a family in the love of Jesus Christ. I
look forward to being a family together in the days and months and years
ahead.
