New Shepherd

This week, our diocese welcomed our new bishop, William Murphy. Let’s keep Bishop Murphy in our prayers in the days ahead as he gets to know our church community on Long Island.

I’d like to welcome back all those who were away from St.Brigid’s on vacation and I’m looking forward to meeting all those I didn’t have a chance to meet over the past two months that I’ve been here.

People have been asking me how I’ve been finding St.Brigid’s and whether I’m “overwhelmed” by its complexity. Not yet. I go to bed tired but happy every evening and while I’m getting used to my new administrative duties, most of the summer has been a wonderful chance to meet people. I’ve visited around 20 homes and met over 300 people at “Sommer in the Summer” -- plus I’ve sampled lots of great desserts.

I had a chance to travel with our youth group to El Salvador, I participated in the variety of processions and celebrations in our community, I met with folks who lead different ministries in our parish. I enjoyed Father Wilson, Father Giuseppe and Father Wismick who visited with us this summer.
All in all, it was a great summer experience.

Now as the parishioners return, I understand that parish life goes into “full gear” with a more varied weekend mass schedule, with school and religious education classes meeting, with regular meetings of parish ministries. I’m ready and excited about seeing all of this in action.

Our parish pastoral staff will begin to meet regularly now that everyone’s back and I am eager to learn more about the life of our parish and to look toward the future together. I have had the pleasure of spending time with each staff member and I’m so impressed by their dedication, talent, hard work and love for the people of our community. Now I welcome the opportunity to work together as a leadership team.

I ask you to continue to pray for me and for our staff in the days ahead. I will continue to pray for you.
