Viva!

Ramp Ready
As many people discovered this past week, we’ve installed a handicap ramp at the Father Schaefer Parish Center. Thanks to Danny Pesce who is coordinating this effort as part of his Eagle Scout Project and to parishioners who have generously contributed toward the cost of the project. Thanks too to Ralph D’Alessandro who poured the concrete. It will take a few weeks for it to cure before a railing is put up, but we’re on the way.

Schedule Online
Our Advent and Christmas Schedule is now online, thanks to Ed Gonzales who transformed the printed mailing into a web page. We’ve also posted photos from the Procession and Pageant. The beautiful Presepio is also online so you can show your out-of-town friends and family (though it’s worth a visit in person) Check it out

Donations Still Needed
A number of local businesses and organizations have contributed over $10,000 toward our parking lot project. We still need further donations to afford this project. If your company or organization can help us at this time, please give a call.

Columns from 2001

Over a thousand parishioners took to the streets last Sunday to honor Mary, the Virgin of Guadalupe in a spectacular procession that concluded with mass in Our Lady’s Chapel. The crowd sang songs in honor of Mary, prayed the rosary and proclaimed, “Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe--- Viva!”

Viva! It’s the Spanish equivalent to “hooray” -- literally, though, it’s “She lives!” when applied to Mary, or “He lives!” when applied to Jesus. And there was no doubt on that clear, crisp Sunday morning that Mary lives in our hearts and minds, in our families and in our parish.

The day continued with more opportunities to proclaim the life of Jesus and Mary. The choir gave a beautiful concert for the residents at the Bristol. And in the evening a “cast of thousands” came together for the 13th Annual Pageant which proclaimed the story of the birth of Jesus. There were singers, dancers, narrators, children in costumes, and an “orchestra” who led the whole congregation in singing.

Viva!” We chanted with the children and parents and grandparents too. “Viva!” for Mary who said “yes” to
God and gave birth to Jesus. “Viva!” for Joseph, the husband of Mary who cared for Jesus as he grew. “Viva!” for Jesus who came to save us.
Yes, the day was a joyful Advent day when we could ready our hearts and minds for the coming of Jesus in our midst. For Jesus lives here. Viva!
