Donations Still Needed
A number of local businesses and organizations have contributed over $10,000 toward our parking lot project. We still need further donations to afford this project. If your company or organization can help us at this time, please give a call.

Columns from 2001

We’re still waiting to reach our goal in the Millennium Fund, yet in the meantime there’s work to be done. One necessary project is the school parking lot which has become dangerous with all the potholes, and would become more dangerous in the winter because of improper drainage. To properly repave the lot it would cost us around $100,000 -- which is money we do not have. Over the past few months, parishioner Carmine Petti has spent countless hours seeking donations of workers and equipment to help bring the costs down and he has done a remarkable job in getting some commitments to help us in the repaving job. We’re very grateful to Carmine for his dedication to this project.

One stumbling block has been that the curbs needed to be redone first -- we received estimates as high as $40,000 for the cubs alone. We were able to cut this cost by more than half thanks to help from our diocesan representative Anthony Bulzomi and through the generous donations of equipment by Sorrentino construction (thanks Sal, Sal and Chris!) (Many thanks to Councilman Tony D’Urso for arranging for this donation) and carting the old curbs away through the generosity of the Core Family of Jamaica Ash. Carmine Petti brought his bobcat over to help remove the old curbs. Finally, the reason we could afford the project is because of the generous labor of our parishioners who are listed at the left. These men hand-dug the trenches for the new curbs, cleaned up the debris and spent two days of hard work to prepare the the site. Thanks to Omar Chirinos for helping to coordinate all the generous workers.

No work at St. Brigid’s would be complete without food so I also want to thank Felicia Oteri, Carmen Chirinos and Jenny Araujo for bringing the coffee, doughnuts, pizza, soda, pupsas, and flautas.

This is the kind of community spirit that continues to make St. Brigid’s so special and I want to thank everyone involved in this project. Grazie y gracias!
