Changing Seasons

After Sister Judy
Sister Judy Mannix is moving to Connecticut and the number one question is, “Who will coordinate the ministries at Casa Mary Johanna?” The good news is that we will welcome Yanira Chacon-Lopez, a woman with many years experience in immigration issues, to this ministry. Yanira will begin on November 4th.

Father Richard

For nearly 20 years, Father Richard Viladesau has been coming to St. Brigid’s on the weekends to celebrate mass with us. We recently got the news that he has been transferred to live and work weekends at St. Vincent de Paul in Elmont. We’re so sad to have to see him go. But we won’t let him go without having a celebration of his life among us. We’re coordinating schedules to decide on a time for a mass and reception. More info next week.

Columns from 2001

One of the first things you notice when walking into church these days is the change of seasons -- as the green trees outside begin to yield to yellows, browns and golds, so too our sanctuary glows with the colors of the season and the bounty of God’s creation. This gives me a chance to say thank you to all those who creatively give glory to God through art.

For the past years the team of Anne Craft and Elaine Trentacoste coordinated and did much of the decorating of church and chapel. At this time Elaine is “retiring” from her coordinator position and I’m grateful that Lorraine Sherman will now be working with Anne to continue the beautiful traditions of celebrating the seasons of the year and seasons of the church liturgy. We are very grateful to Elaine for her years of dedicated service, hard work and beautiful designs. Many thanks to Anne whose beautiful banners and artistic arrangements continue to inspire prayer.

Then there are those whose craft helps to provide the underpinning for much of the decorating. Al Posillico and his team of carpenters have created crosses, candle stands, all sorts of platforms and other supports for a variety of seasonal decorations.
Our next BIG decorating change begins on Election Day and will take weeks to prepare -- it is the annual Presepio coordinated by Gregg Pangburn and Al Peck. As you’ll see in this week’s bulletin, you too can be part of the creation of this beautiful scene which celebrates Advent and Christmas in a unique way as Joseph and Mary travel from our church to Bethlehem. If you can carry things from the basement to the church, if you’re good with a hammer, if you do electrical or light plumbing work, etc. come join us.

God has given each person a set of talents and personal “gifts” and first calls us to use them in the life we’re given -- we share these gifts with our families and at work. One way to say “thank you” to God is to share some time and talent in the community of the church. Have you got a gift to share? How can you offer that gift?
