Quote of the Week

“Abortion is advanced in the name of freedom, but it undermines freedom by demeaning life itself. No
society can be truly free if its most vulnerable members can lose their very lives at the hands of others.
And far from giving greater freedom to women, abortion leaves many women feeling trapped in a deep
well of sorrow and remorse.”

Columns from 2001

Did you ever have such a good experience that you wanted everyone else to share it too? That’s the story behind our two new Youth Ministers, Nancy Polycarpe (left) and Meredith Neus. They have been part of St. Brigid’s parish for their whole lives and had such a great experience growing up here with our youth programs, that now that they have returned from college, they want to give the gift they have received with a new generation of high school students.

In fact Nancy’s dad told me that from the time Nancy was in her mother’s womb, she came to our church every week -- how’s that for early “youth formation”!!

I’m happy to accept Meredith and Nancy as the new directors of our Youth Ministry program. Over the weeksahead they’ll be signing up Youth Leaders and participants so I encourage parishioners who have the gifts and time to work with young people to consider applying to volunteer in our youth program. Also I encourage all teens to come and join in the different activities that are being planned for the year ahead.

A few years ago, the bishops of country wrote a vision for Youth Ministry in America and they said, “All ministry with adolescents must be directed toward presenting young people with the Good News of Jesus Christ and inviting and challenging them to become his disciples...If we are to succeed, we must offer people a spiritually challenging and world-shaping vision that meets their hunger for the chance to participate in a worthy adventure.”

I believe that with Nancy and Meredith’s example, witness and leadership, there will be a “worthy adventure” in the year ahead. They build on the wonderful work of those who have led them in faith and community and now they’ll lead us in sharing the Good News in wonderful ways!
