Going Away to College?
Some families are getting ready to pack the car and drive their sons and daughters off to college -- some for the first time, some back to continue what they started. Being away from home is a little less difficult these days because of e-mail. Most colleges provide their students with an e-mail account, and families and friends can stay in touch. For the past year I’ve been sending a “letter from home” almost every week to our parishioners who are away at college. The feedback on this was great as our college students felt really connected to parish life here.
To receive the “letter from home”, take this bulleting with you to college as a reminder to send in your e-mail address. Just Click Here!

Today’s Bible Quote

’“Jeuss said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’
Simon Peter said in reply,
‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’”
- Matthew 16

E
very day a steady stream of people come to our food pantry at Parish Outreach to receive some basic necessities to get through the next week. Many are mothers with babies and young children. Our source of food is the generosity of people who bring it to the church each week and put their food donations in the large baskets at the entrance to church. We also get food from organizations outside our parish.
As you can see from the photo, our shelves are just about empty -- this is not a “publicity photo” -- it’s exactly how the shelves look this mornings (I wrote this on Tuesday morning) -- I just went downstairs from my room in the rectory and took the photo of our pantry shelves. It will be hard to feed families this week.

One parishioner recently told me that she and her husband shop the supermarket sales to buy food for outreach. It works like this: you might see a really good sale (perhaps with a coupon, or a two-for-one sale) on an item you don’t need or usually use -- yet it’s really a good bargain. So why not buy the item and donate it to our food pantry? Some supermarkets have special “gimmicks” to get you to show there. For example at www.pathmark.com you can download coupons for
one-cent sale items (one week it was a jar of jelly for one cent). You can bring the coupons to the store when you’re shopping and use it to buy food for hungry people. Even one cent can make a difference!

When shopping with your children or grandchildren, make it a habit of asking them to choose one food item with you for kids who are hungry. It will help to raise them with a consciousness that we can make a difference in our world by doing small things.
