Every day a steady stream of people come to our food pantry at Parish Outreach to receive some basic necessities to get through the next week. Many are mothers with babies and young children. Our source of food is the generosity of people who bring it to the church each week and put their food donations in the large baskets at the entrance to church. We also get food from organizations outside our parish. |

| As you can see from
the photo, our shelves are just about empty -- this is not a publicity
photo -- its exactly how the shelves look this mornings (I wrote
this on Tuesday morning) -- I just went downstairs from my room in the rectory
and took the photo of our pantry shelves. It will be hard to feed families
this week. One parishioner recently told me that she and her husband shop the supermarket sales to buy food for outreach. It works like this: you might see a really good sale (perhaps with a coupon, or a two-for-one sale) on an item you dont need or usually use -- yet its really a good bargain. So why not buy the item and donate it to our food pantry? Some supermarkets have special gimmicks to get you to show there. For example at www.pathmark.com you can download coupons for one-cent sale items (one week it was a jar of jelly for one cent). You can bring the coupons to the store when youre shopping and use it to buy food for hungry people. Even one cent can make a difference! When shopping with your children or grandchildren, make it a habit of asking them to choose one food item with you for kids who are hungry. It will help to raise them with a consciousness that we can make a difference in our world by doing small things. |
