Summer Plans

Celebrating Father Rolando
On Sunday, June 16th, the Spanish community is celebrating Father’s Day with a special emphasis: Father Rolando. At the end of June, Father Rolando will be beginning a new assignment in Glen Cove and at the 11:30 Spanish Mass in the school, we will have a special blessing for Father Rolando followed by a barbecue outside. Come join us for Mass and/or the barbecue to say thanks to Father Rolando for his ministry among us.

“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood
has eternal life,

For my flesh is true food,

Columns from 2001

Before we know it, the kids will be out of school, people will packing the cars for vacation trips and we’ll have a little more time to recreate and relax. At St. Brigid’s, we’ll be welcoming our summertime visiting priests so that we (the “regular priests”) have a chance at a few weeks vacation. Returning during the summer will be Father Wilson, Father Giuseppe and joining us for the first time will be Father Louis -- a friend of Father Victor -- and Father Art Kalinsky, a Vincentian priest, who will be here with a seminarian to help plan and run a parish mission in Spanish.
I’ve been thinking of offering a few things during the summer. For example, I’m considering offering a basic course on writing web pages. The course will be free...well, not exactly. You see, if you learn this skill, you can then help write pages for the parish web site in the future! So whether you’re off from school or retired, or anywhere in between, and if you have basic computer and typing skills, look for this opportunity in summer. It’ll be fun and you’ll learn a new useful skill.

T
hen there’s the “heavy lifting”. We have so many things stored in attics, basements, closets, various rooms, etc. Much of this is used throughout the year and just needs to get organized a little better. Some of the stuff is not used (e.g. old cardboard boxes, broken flower pots, etc.) and could find a better “home”. So... if after three days of vacation your children start to say that they are bored, consider signing them up for a little church clean-up and re-organization. The skills they learn here are also useful for their own rooms!

Last summer I offered “Sommer in the Summer”, a chance for me to visit with parishioners to get to know them. It was delightful and delicious. I’d like to do the same again this summer and come visit people -- gather a group of friends and neighbors in your home, have dessert and invite me over. It’s that simple.
Since we haven’t quite finished planning our vacation times, I haven’t set dates for these activities, but check the bulletin in the weeks ahead. Also, if you’re interested in being notified by e-mail, drop me a line at: shepherd@saintbrigid.net
