Columns from 2001

I have a standing invitation to visit my folks and I know I can just drop in any time. (I find it wise to call first ‘cause my parents live an active life so I might show up when they’re out.) That’s how it is with family. So it felt very comfortable when a week ago I got a call saying that Bishop Murphy wanted to drop in and visit St. Brigid’s this weekend. It felt like family.
Some people asked whether we had to arrange anything out of the ordinary because “the bishop was coming”. I thought for a moment and realized that Bishop Murphy would love to see us just as we are -- and
“who we are” is quite wonderful. We could just be ourselves and I know that we will enjoy his visit, and he’ll enjoy visiting with us.
I’m sure that Bishop Murphy will feel at home here. You may notice that he speaks with an accent that betrays his Boston background. But we all know that the people in our parish speak with accents too for we come from all over the globe and have learned how to join our voices together in praise of God. There’s always room for yet another accent.
And since coming to Long Island, Bishop Murphy has spoken out clearly for the rights of immigrants and has called people to appreciate the gifts that different cultures bring to the church and to our neighborhoods. There aren’t too many other parishes in our diocese where mass is celebrated in four languages each Sunday. (Bishop Murphy will be celebrating mass in three of the four today!) We already live the words he speaks to the whole diocese.
I’m glad that families will have a chance to meet our bishop. We pray for him at every mass and now he can be more than a “name”. Our children will be touched by his warmth and start to get to know him as the good shepherd of our diocese.
In today’s gospel we see how Jesus goes off with his disciples and is transfigured before their eyes. This weekend Bishop Murphy has chosen to drop in at our parish. May the transfiguring power of Christ be with him and with us as together we walk the journey to the reign of God.
