Our Wonderful School

Christmas Past
The church seems so stark this week since the Christmas decorations were taken down last week. Many thanks to Elaine Trentacoste and Anne Craft who led a church-ful of volunteers in decorating for Advent, Christmas and then had the task of un-decorating. We're now back in "ordinary time", time in church life where we expect God to come to us in ordinary moments of our lives. Look and see! God comes!

This is the time each year when parents start considering the question, "Where shall our children go to school next year?" Some opt for their local public school; some consider the benefits of a Catholic School Education. Well I'm new to this community and I'm only starting to get to know the local public schools in Westbury, Carle Place and East Meadow. But I REALLY know our St. Brigid's/Our Lady of Hope School and I'm not ashamed to brag a little (OK a lot) about this remarkable community of administrators, teachers, parents and students.

I used the word "community" first, not "educational institution". Of course our children get a great education at St. Brigid's/Our Lady of Hope School. But the community life forms children and their families in ways beyond academic education.

Look at some of the things that our school community offers:
• Extracurricular activities- Drama Club, Chorus, Band, a program which integrates Science, Technology and Social Studies, Dance, Student Council, Reading Club, and National Junior Honor Society.

• Students are involved in a variety of service activities -- cards for veterans, Christmas giving tree, Walk-a-thon for the Red Cross, Thanksgiving Luncheon for Senior Citizens, food drives, Math-athon for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Make-a-Wish, Boy's & Girl's Town, UNICEF and Senior Connections.

• Older and younger students are paired throughout the year as prayer buddies for Mass and service projects

• The school participates in and sponsors various co-curricular activities -- Math Fair, Science Fair, Art Contests, Career Day, Humanities Fair, and Multicultural Festival.

• The school offers an after-school child care program

• Each classroom has a collection of books, dictionaries, encyclopedias and one or more computers.

• All students regularly write in journals.

• There's an excellent program for gifted and talented students...

I'm running out of room with a lot more to brag about. It has been my pleasure to be involved in the school community on a regular basis. A few weeks from now parents will have a chance to register their children. It's an excellent place to consider.
