What are YOUR reasons for being confirmed?
We recently asked kids to tell us some reasons they heard about why people are confirmed in the church. Here's the kind of answers they gave....
Excellent Reasons Less than Excellent Reasons
To get closer to God Yes Confirmation DOES bring you closer to God...but not by "magic". It works because you are actually spending more time with God...by coming to church...by praying...by serving others. To get religion over with. That's like going out for a sports team, going to all the practices and tryouts, and then quitting once the first game starts! Confirmation makes you MORE a part of the religion, not less.
To receive the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit IS God. Wouldn't it be great if the same Spirit that was in Jesus was fully alive in YOU? ...helping you with decisions ...comforting you ...strengthening you... etc. To become an adult in the church Well, you'll only become an adult in the church when you actually become an adult (and if you stay with the church). In the meantime, you're a teenager and that's fine with us!

It's one of the seven Sacraments.
Yes. Sacraments are signs of God's life and love. Confirmation is the sign that God's Holy Spirit will love you and be with you always. This sacrament confirms that you will be very active in the church from now on. To get money. There is no reason to get money when you get confirmed. That has nothing to do with the sacrament. If someone DOES give you money, it would be good to use that to help people who are suffering from poverty or illness.
To Confirm faith. Just as we call an airline to "confirm" the reservation (to see if the plane will be there) so too we "confirm" faith. So... is your faith there? How can we tell? You miss school. Sorry. For some, Confirmation takes place AFTER school.

You become more responsible.
Sure. If YOU say that you want to be confirmed, then YOU are responsible for coming to church each week, praying more, acting more like Jesus. To get married in the church. People who aren't confirmed can still get married in the church. People who get married in the church are supposed to come to church every weekend. That's the BEST way to get ready to be married.
