Everyone Shared

“There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale,
and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need.” We heard these words from the Acts of the Apostles last week at Mass and they portrayed the earliest Christian community as generous to those in need.

Two thousand years later we’re still sharing with those in need. The need, however, is growing greater. More people are out of work and more families are seeking help from our food pantry. For the first time in many years, our shelves are almost empty. In another week we’ll run out of food.

I sent an e-mail to parishioners earlier in the week and many have already responded so we’re able to replenish our shelves and continue to help families. Thanks to all who are already helping.

Over the next few weeks I invite you to do a little extra shopping when you buy food for your family. Then bring the non-perishable food to mass on Sunday. At the family mass (10am) we invite children to bring the food to the sanctuary at the offertory time and that’s a good way to teach children about caring for others in need. At all masses, baskets are at the doors of the church for food donations. Since thousands of people come to mass each weekend, even a small food donation from each will help us in this ministry of feeding the hungry.

If you belong to a group (book club, senior group, sports team, etc.) why not invite your group to bring food to their next meeting and then bring that along to church either on the weekend or during the week? The food pantry is in the basement of the rectory.

Marathon

The Long Island Marathon runs through our neighborhood next Sunday, May 3rd, forcing some roads closed during the morning mass times.
Please be sure to give yourselves extra time to come to church next Sunday morning so you can get here despite the road closures. You might have to be creative in your route -- it will give you a chance to tour other neighborhoods and to pray for the people who live there as you drive through.

Extreme Makeover

Over 50 people showed for the information nights about the “extreme makeover” of Saint Anthony’s Hall so we’re off to a good start. Over the weeks ahead we’ll publish the progress we’re making as well as a “needs list.” Thank you to all who came out for the meetings last week. For those who were unable to attend and who would like to help, you can call (516) 334-0021 ext 144 or
