Every year we celebrate the Feast of Saint Brigid of Ireland on February 1st. This year because her feast day falls on a Sunday, we’re planning an extra-special form of celebrating the saint for whom our parish is named. Please be sure to encourage other parishioners to to attend mass next Sunday. (And especially invite people named Brigid!)
Do you know who Saint Brigid is? Next week you’ll learn something of her life. How does the parish of Saint Brigid in Westbury carry on the qualities of St. Brigid’s life? Come and find out! During each mass we’ll have a special prayer litany that joins us together as a community that does the work of Jesus -- inspired by St. Brigid (the saint) and inspired by St. Brigid (the parish). Those attending mass will be able to take home a prayer folder with an icon of St. Brigid.
Following each mass, we invite people to walk through an exhibit of “life at St. Brigid’s.” Different parish groups and ministries are putting together photo displays of what happens in a typical year at St. Brigid’s and you might be surprised to discover things that take place here that you didn’t know about before. Of course there’ll be some refreshments too. For those attending mass in church, the display will be across the street in St. Anthony’s Hall. For those attending mass in the chapel in the school, the display will be in Code Auditorium. We hope you’ll plan on taking some time before or after mass to walk through the life at St. Brigid’s exhibit.
On the Feast of St. Brigid’s we’ll pick the $500 winner of the St. Brigid’s Big Bucks Bonanza drawing and we’ll have the little
light-up ceramic models of St. Brigid’s church available for purchase ($35). “Brigidwear” (our own line of clothing with St. Brigid’s logo on it) will be on display and you can order Brigidwear in your choice of styles, sizes and colors.
Because the Feast of St. Brigid often falls during the week, we don’t always get the chance to celebrate our patroness in a big way. Next Saturday night and Sunday, we hope to rejoice in St. Brigid in a fitting way. (Lots of people will be focussed on the Super Bowl -- we, the parishioners of St. Brigid’s have something extra special to focus on next weekend.)

This gives me an opportunity to thanks people who continue to support the work of the church by their weekly contributions -- especially those who make an extra sacrifice to keep giving at the level they have. And it’s a chance for me to invite everyone to consider if they can give a little more to help us through these tough times.
