Congratulations Socorro!

Catechetical Sunday
Today we celebrate the beginning of another year in Religious Education by blessing our catechists and celebrating with our families whose children are enrolled in our Religious Education Program.
We are grateful to our catechists -- volunteers who take time each week to share their faith with our children. They are led by our Directors of Religious Education: Sister Ann Horn, Socorro Moreno and Meg Westfall, with Vince Buzzeo as coordinator of Youth Ministry. Barbara Budion coordinates the office and Rosemary Moreno is our evening receptionist.
Together we support parents in their role as the primary teachers of their children in the ways of faith. Let’s face it -- one religion class a week is only a small part of the faith life of a family. Coming to church each week, praying together at home, reading the bible -- all these are important parts of leading our children to Jesus. We renew our efforts during this special Sunday.

T
his is the second year that the Diocese of Rockville Centre has awarded the “Saint Agnes Medal” for service to the church community and I’m thrilled to announce that this year’s recipent from Saint Brigid’s is Socorro Moreno. Bishop Murphy awarded Socorro this honor on Friday, September 12th at a special ceremony at Saint Agnes Cathedral.

Socorro is one of the founding members of the Spanish community in St. Brigid’s parish and has served the parish for decades. For the past six years most families with young children would know Socorro as one of the Directors of Religious Education. Yet she served faithfully for many years prior to this leadership role in the Religious Edication Program -- as a catechist, lector, extradornary minister of Holy Communion and community leader. Socorro also served for a time in the Diocesan Office of Hispanic Ministry.

I am particularly happy that our diocese recognizes the gifts that Socorro has shared. Socorro is not the kind of person who likes to be “in the spotlight” -- she has a quiet way about her, She has been a constant in a changing church -- always there to welcome people, to offer assurance, to lead people to Christ. As this parish saw a growth of hispanic immigrants over the decades, Socorro was very helpful in making the transition possible -- helpful to the immigrants and helpful to the parish.

Congratulations to Socorro and thank you for your service to so many familes in our parish community. May God bless you for all that you have shared with us.
