Welcome Father Jaime

Autism Info Night
If you know of anyone who has a child with autism or Asperger’s Syndrome, please invite them to an information night this Tuesday, June 24th at 7:30pm in our school on Maple Ave. All are welcomed.
The program developers for Westbrook Preparatory School will be making a presentation on the services they seek to provide starting in September 2009. During the upcoming year, they propose to renovate our Convent Building to become a small residential school for children with high-functioning autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. This is an answer to our prayers for a suitable tenant for our convent building which has remained empty for over a year. The school will be seeking a hearing with the Westbury Village Zoning Board in July to get approval for this use and then they can make final application to New York State for funding.

I was very happy to receive a call last week from Bishop Murphy that Father Jaime Calderon will be assigned as an Associate Pastor of Saint Brigid’s Parish starting the 25th of June.
Father Jaime (pronounced “high-mee”) -- his full name is Jaime Adolfo Calderon Hernández -- is originally from Columbia and was ordained by Bishop Murphy for the Diocese of Rockville Centre a few years ago. (While this year’s ordination class was nine in number, the year Father Jaime was ordained, he was the only one in his class!) Father Jaime has served the Cathedral Parish of Saint Agnes since his ordination and comes to us to serve the whole parish community, with special emphasis on ministry to those who speak Spanish.

It’s wonderful how God works. A few weeks ago my Uncle Joe died and I went to the Cathedral to celebrate his funeral mass. Father Jaime was there to welcome me and he concelebrated the mass -- which brought extra comfort to my Aunt. Little did we know that we would be assigned together shortly thereafter. Father Jaime, upon hearing about his assignment, stopped over to visit St. Brigid’s and I met him walking to the church. When we met I told him that it was my birthday and I couldn’t have thought of a better gift to receive. He told me that it was his birthday too! So he got Saint Brigid’s as his birthday gift!

Over the next few months, in between vacations, we’ll all get to know Father Jaime and welcome him into our parish family community.
