When
a parent teaches a child to be thankful to God, religious education is
happening. When an older brother or sister teaches a younger sibling to
share, religious education is happening. When a grandparent prays with
a grandchild, religious education is happening. When a family reads the
gospel together before Sunday and talks about their experience after Mass
on Sunday, religious education is happening. Indeed the FIRST place religious
education happens is in the family.
But because families need and want
support in helping their children become disciples of Jesus, parishes
offer programs of Religious Education led by professional Directors of
Religious Education and volunteer catechists.
This week we have been celebrating
our parish Religious Education leaders: Sister Ann Horn, Socorro Moreno,
Meg Westfall and Vince Buzzeo; our catechists who teach in our program;
our parents who are raising their children to be followers of Jesus; our
children who are learning to know, love and serve God and their neighbor.
We are grateful for Barbara Budion and Rosemary Marquez who serve families
in our Religious Education Office.
During this week ahead where our
nation celebrates Thanksgiving, we give thanks to God for our faith and
for all those involved in our parish Religious Education Program. And
we give thanks to the parents and grandparents who lead their children
to Christ.
What are YOU thankful for? If you
want to try out a quick and easy online way of making a thanksgiving prayer,
go to our parish website: www.saintbrigid.net and click on the “What
are you thankful for?” link. (It’s like online Religious
Education --only it’s fun!) Maybe you’ll be able to use these
prayers at your table on Thursday (or each night during Thanksgiving week).
Finally, I’m thankful to
be alive and alive here at St. Brigid’s. I’m looking forward
of celebrating Thanksgiving together.
