Fathers
Away
Father John is away this week -- along with Father Jim Mannion and some
parishioners --on a pilgrimage to Fatima, Spain and France. We pray
for their safe return.
I’ll be away all this week in Baltimore for a training workshop
on community organizing. So Father Fitz, Father Chacha and Father Jim
Hannon are working overtime this week to cover all the activities. Be
kind to them!
Blood
Drive Monday
Since I won’t be here on Monday for our blood drive (from 4pm
to 9pm in Code Auditorium), I would like to ask you to stop over and
donate a pint of blood. If you’re between the age of 16 and 76
and weigh more than 110 pounds and are in good health, you’re
eligible to give. If you give a pint of blood in my stead, the life-giving
act that I would have done will still be done. Thanks!

No,
the heading is not bad grammar. Last year the people of St. Brigid’s
raised $4,482 in our collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.
That’s “doing good”
because the funds are used for community development on Long Island and
across the country. So Saint Brigid’s received an award for our
generosity. Here I am pictured with Bishop Peter Libasci who presented
St. Brigid’s with an acknowledgement of our good work. (We matched
parishes such as St. Joseph’s (Garden City) and Our Lady, Queen
of Martyrs (Centerport) in our generosity.)
The irony was that after I received
the award at Catholic Charities, I was invited to get up again as one
of the recipients of funding for the coming year since some of the funds
we gave to do good works, actually came back to us as part of a program
for community development that we will be joining. (I’ll tell more
about this after next week’s training in Washington -- which the
program is paying for.)
As Thanksgiving approaches we’re
again taking the collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development
next weekend. Please be generous again. One in eight Americans lives below
the poverty line. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development helps communities
rise above the poverty line and our donations will help low-income people
as they work together to solve community problems, increase wages, and
secure affordable housing.
Not only will we do good again
this year, but we’ll do well!
