On
June 1, 1957 (just nine days before my first birthday) Father Jim Hannon
and his classmates were ordained to the priesthood for the newly formed
diocese of Rockville Centre. For fifty years Father Jim has served the
people of our diocese in the parishes of St. Joseph’s, Kings Park;
Holy name of Jesus, Woodbury; Nassau University Medical Center; St. Ignatius,
Long Beach; the motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood;
St. Matthew’s, Dix Hills; St. Jude’s, Mastic Beach; Sacred
Heart, Cutchogue; St. Anne’s, Brentwood; and upon retirement, St.
Brigid’s.
Now most people I know wouldn’t
think of “retiring” at such a busy parish as St. Brigid’s,
but Father Jim chose us as his home because he wanted an active retirement
and because of his love of language and (more importantly) his love of
the people who speak different languages. Since he’s been here,
Father Jim has become an active member of our parish family, celebrating
the sacraments, enlivening our dinner conversations, moderating the Legion
of Mary and becoming a chaplain to the Knights of Columbus.
Today he is celebrating a jubilee
mass at his former parish, St. Anne’s in Brentwood. But we do not
want his golden jubilee to pass here unnoticed. So, Father Jim will celebrate
another anniversary mass next Sunday, June 10th, at 11:30 am, followed
by a reception on St. Brigid’s Green. We invite parishioners to
bring “finger food” to share at the reception. If you can
bring something, please call Shannon at 338-2989 and leave a message as
to what you’ll be bringing. (Please call by Wednesday). All are
invited to celebrate the priesthood that Father Jim has lived this past
half-century. God bless you Father Jim!
