First let me wish you and your family a Blessed Easter on behalf of our entire staff at St. Brigid’s. We’re about to begin these fantastic fifty days to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus in our lives. I’m glad you’re here for the journey.

But as you can see in our Easter gospel this day, it didn’t start out so well. For us, with a vantage point of 2000 years we see the empty tomb as a triumph. But imagine what the friends of Jesus felt when they went to his tomb and found it empty. (What would YOU feel if you stopped off at Holy Rood after mass today to visit the grave of a friend or relative only to find an empty hole?)

So Easter starts off not with the best news. The disciples are still reeling after the brutal death of Jesus and now comes the news that his body is not where they left it! We can only imagine the confusion, anger, pain, disbelief, and fear that surged through them. But then again, didn’t Jesus tell them he’d rise from the dead? So amidst all the fear and confusion, there would have been hoping against hope that it could be true. We’ll have to wait til next week to see what happens next. So in the meantime let’s wrestle with where the disciples are at the first Easter.

They might remind us of ourselves at a vulnerable time -- filled with mixed feelings...filled with hope one moment, not daring to hope the next,,,not knowing where Jesus is at a given moment of trouble...not knowing what to do when our expectations aren’t met.
If this feels familiar, then you know how to celebrate Easter. The wonder of the resurrection comes to us gradually through out struggles. But it IS coming. You’ll see...these next fifty days will be filled with all of Jesus’ surprising appearances and he’ll bring healings, and moments of peace, food and forgiveness, and he’ll leave his followers with a Sprit-filled mission.

Get ready! We’re setting out toward Pentecost as one Body of Christ, the parish of St. Brigid’s. Alleluia!
