Heritage Celebration

New Chalices
The new chalices for the chapel have arrived. We’re still awaiting the delivery of the ones for the church. We are also getting metal plates for the hosts. Once the whole order is in, people will have a chance to memorialize these church vessels . We will engrave the name of a person onto each of the chalices and plates. Watch for further information in the weeks ahead.
The silver-color chalices at the chapel match the rest of the liturgical objects (tabernacle, processional cross, etc.) They are made with a Celtic design which recalls the Irish heritage of our parish and it’s patroness, St. Brigid of Kildare.

At College?
At St. Brigid’s we like to stay in touch through
e-mail “letters from home.”
Once a person has an e-mail address at school (or if he/she uses a personal address), please let us know what it is so we can include them when we write.
Here's a handy college link so you can send this info online.

This weekend in October is a festive one. The cooler weather starts to change the color of the leaves, we get a day off on Monday and we remember our heritage. Columbus Day is a celebration of Italian Heritage. Hispanics celebrate “Dia de la Raza” which recognizes the diversity of latino cultures. (To get a taste of the Hispanic cultures, stop in Code Auditorium today (Sunday) at 1pm where a festival is set up with tables from each of the Spanish-speaking countries represented in our parish.

For those of us who are not Hispanic, it’s a natural temptation to group all Spanish-speaking people together as if there is one culture. However Hispanics come from many varied countries. (We wouldn’t say that Irish and Italians have the same culture because they’re both “European”. So too there are differences between Salvadorans and Mexicans, for example.) The Spanish language unifies. Our common faith certainly unifies. But there is a beautiful diversity.

We’re also celebrating the second anniversary of our Spanish young Adult Group this weekend. This is a group founded by Father George and a group of young people in our parish. Young Adults meet each Sunday and reflect on a spiritual theme. They’ve formed a musical group. They are involved in works of service and charity. They celebrated their second anniversary with a special mass and a party on Saturday night. We are so happy that St. Brigid’s can be a “home” for the young men and women of our parish. Many of them have left their families behind in their countries and are living here without any family. So we are the family they can feel safe with.

Finally you may have noticed the carnival rides in the school parking lot. I’ve been asked which parish group is running the feast. This festival is being run by the carnival company itself and some proceeds go to St. Brigid/Our Lady of Hope school. So we get much appreciated funds and people get to have a fun time to celebrate our heritage weekend.
