II got back from vacation and found a check in my mailbox from the diocese
for $5,840.95. (Just in time too because we have to pay the big bills
for the new parking lot at the school.) Now why did the Diocese send
this? Thanks to the parihioners who are supporting the Catholic Ministries
Appeal this year, we’ve already gotten a 10% rebate of what you
donated to the appeal which supports the pastoral work of the diocese.
We’re over 60% toward completing our goal at which time we’ll
get a full 20% rebate.
So may I ask you -- if you haven’t already made a donation to
the Catholic Ministries Appeal -- to make your contribution this week?
It helps the church on Long Island minister to people and, as the check
received indicates, it helps our parish too.

Sommer
in the Summer
Got some things you’d like to ask a priest? Want to have a nice
conversation about God, the church, the world, the future? Like hosting
gatherings in your home? Got dessert? Then you’re a candidate
to host one of this year’s Sommer in the Summer sessions. Father
Ralph Sommer wants to visit folks throughout the parish throughout the
summer for as chance to hear what people are thinking, wondering about,
or questioning. The process is casual and simple. Pick a date with Father
Ralph (during the day...or evenings). Then invite friends or neighbors
to come. (Twelve people is a good number for this.) Tell them to prepare
some questions or topics they’d like to talk about. Get dessert.
This is a good way for a pastor to get to know folks in an informal
setting.
E-mail or call Father Ralph if you’d like to host.

At St. Brigids we like to stay in touch through
e-mail letters from home.
Once a person has an e-mail address at school (or if he/she uses a personal
address), please let us know what it is so we can include them when
we write.
Here's a handy college link so you
can send this info online.

It’s
worth a trip over to Maple Ave to see the new parking
lot! Thanks to a very generous Dominic Iannucci who donated his time,
men and machines and thanks to members of the Dell’Assunta Society
who donated their time, expertise and raised some funds for the project,
we have a new lot. Dominic worked the machines himself with his brother
Tony and it was amazing to see the skill at which the whole crew paved
the lot -- this a job that will last for decades. I especially want to
commend Carmine Petti for helping to make the job go so smoothly -- by
bringing over his own equipment, and getting several construction firms
to donate the use of their trucks for the day. He did so many behind-the-scenes
things to make everything go well. (I’ll have a full list of thank-you’s
in the weeks ahead.)
The
parish had to hire a company to prepare the lot. It cost over $30,000
to grind down the old asphalt, mix it and compact it to use as a base
for the new paving. We also pay for the new storm drains, electrical hook-up
and for the actual asphalt. (Alas since it’s made from oil, the
higher oil prices make the going rate $50 a ton.) We needed around 900
tons of asphalt to complete the job,
So with these big bills coming
in, I’d like to invite as many parishioners as possible to buy a
ton or two of asphalt. We’ll give you a lovely asphalt certificate
since you won’t be able to take your ton home. Click
here to donate your ton of asphalt!
We will put lines on the parking lot to indicate parking
spaces. Some spaces will be designated for handicapped parking. The lines
will be put down after the Dell’Assunta Feast on August 15th. (And
we’re being assured that the booths and rides will not be puncturing
the new lot.)
I have a lot more people to thank
for this incredible job -- you can
see some of them here. This job is another example of how the people
of our parish work together to share their time, talent and treasure to
make things better for the whole community.
