Facing the Future

Mother's Day
We honor our mothers today...but why stop at today? A mother’s work is never done -- even when they’re in heaven we ask them for help! Here are some quotes that might bring a smile or two...
“A suburban mother's role is to deliver children obstetrically once, and by car forever after.”  ~Peter De Vries
“When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts.  A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child.”  ~Sophia Loren
“Mother love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do the impossible.”
~Marion C. Garretty
“God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers”.
~Jewish Proverb
“Mother is the name for God in the lips and hearts of little children.”
~William Makepeace Thackeray

At St. Brigid’s we like to stay in touch through
e-mail “letters from home.”
Once a person has an e-mail address at school (or if he/she uses a personal address), please let us know what it is so we can include them when we write.
Here's a handy college link so you can send this info online.

There a series of commercials where people are given bad news. Then the person says, “but I have good news -- I just saved money on my car insurance.” Well we’re facing some bad news....

Both Father George and Father Leonard are leaving St. Brigid’s this summer. Father George’s order, the Marianists, have asked him to return to work within his order. And although Father Leonard’s bishop in Nigeria was willing to let him stay another year with us, new immigration rules after 9-11 have made it impossible for him to remain here once his visa expires. Originally Father Leonard was planning to stay until he earned his masters degree -- and, to share at least some good news, Father Leonard receives his degree from CW Post this weekend! Congratulations to Father Leonard on this accomplishment.

Father George and Father Leonard have written an article for this bulletin, explaining in more detail their situations. As pastor I am saddened by the impending loss of these two fine priests. (Actually, “saddened” is too mild a word.) I have been praying for them and for the countless people in our parish whose lives will be affected by their moving on. I’m also praying that there will be priests available to come to St. Brigids to carry on the ministry.

Our parish would like to celebrate the ministries of Father George and Father Leonard and we’ll be scheduling masses at which we can pray with them as they leave for their new assignments. We’ll also be featuring them as guests of honor at our annual Parish Volunteer Ministries Party, the afternoon of June 5th. Details to follow in the weeks ahead.

In the meantime, let’s pray for each other during this difficult time. This is not easy for us. (And unlike the commercial, we can’t even say we’re saving money on our car insurance!!)
May the guidance of the Holy Spirit help us all in the days ahead.
