In
preparation for this week’s discussion groups on the passion and
death of Jesus, I’ve been talking to young people who have seen
the movie. My number one question is “How has seeing that movie
affected your relationship with God?”
Some comments I’ve heard...
• I’ve come to realize how human Jesus is -- even though he’s
God, he’s just like us
• I feel closer to Jesus -- he gave his life for us. I know I’ve
heard that before but now I realize that more
• For me the movie puts my life in perspective. I complain about
a lot of things. I realize now that I don’t have that much to complain
about.
• I don’t know why people were so cruel to him. It makes me
think about how I’m unkind to others
• I’m paying more attention in church these days. The movie
made a lot off the words we hear real.
Whether you’ve seen the movie
or not, you’re invited to join in a presentation this Tuesday which
will discuss the passion and death of Jesus. We’ll look at what
the gospels say, what the prayers of the mass say, and what we know from
history about the reasons for his death and how the death and resurrection
of Jesus affects our lives today. There’ll be two different sessions
- the morning session will be at 10am in the chapel in the school. The
evening session will be at 7:30pm in Code Auditorium.
Today’s gospel of the Forgiving
Father is even more amazing in light of the death of Jesus. The kind of
forgiveness offered in the story is more than matched by the forgiveness
of Jesus on the cross. He puts his life where his words are and that certainly
gives us new hope and new life. If Jesus forgave the cruelty done to him
2000 years ago, will he not also forgive our sins? And with Jesus as our
Lord, our example, our teacher and guide, can we not forgive one another?
