Penny Power & Catholic Schools

Praying for Peace
Some of our parishioners have been deployed to the Middle East and we pray that the conflict will be over before fighting begins so they will come home safe and soon. I’m inviting you to send in the names of service men and women who are in your family. We’ll print the names in the bulletin in the weeks ahead so all of us can join in praying together for our loved one’s safe return.

Pax Christi
These words mean “The Peace of Christ”. They also refer to a group which continues to pray for peace and educate people about issues of peace. On Feb 5th at 7:30 in the Chapel, St. Brigid’s will be hosting a Pax Christi presentation by Father Roy Bourgeois MM, a Vietnam War veteran and Maryknoll Missionary. He recently went to Iraq as part of a religious delegation to promote peace. He has some disturbing things to say about the “School of the Americas” in Georgia and its implication on terrorism in Latin America.

For years we’ve been hearing that little announcement once a month, “Buckets will be at the door for your change and other donations for Father Wismick’s school in Haiti.” And people faithfully remember to bring in donations to put in the coin buckets at the end of mass.
Father Wismick recently wrote to tell our parish that they were recently able to complete a Chemistry Lab for Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Haiti. He sent along a photo of the children taken on the day of the dedication, November 4,2002. Father Wismick said, “Pennies made miracles! What a great event for the kids! what a great joy! We are most grateful for the generosity of the parishioners of St. Brigid’s.”

It is the ongoing generosity of St. Brigid’s parishioners that make our own local Catholic school possible. As we celebrate Catholic Schools week, we think of the many students who have passed through the doors of the school (either the current building or the former building which is now St. Anthony’s Hall); we remember the past and present faculty and principals and other staff. We recall the many life-long family friendships that

grew out of our school and hoe people first got involved in parish life because of their involvement with the school community.

If you’re an alumnus of the school and didn’t recently get the new Alumni Newsletter, we’d be happy to hear from you. Just call the school office (516)333-0580 or e-mail the office at stbolh@optonline.net

If you have children and are considering enrolling them in a Catholic school, why not stop by during the open house this week? (See the times listed in this bulletin.) Since I’ve been here, I’ve been so impressed at all that our school offers children and families. I think you’ll be impressed too.

Let us all pray for the ministry of Catholic Schools this week, whether down the block or down the hemisphere!
